Day 2
The Thornburgh team took on Chanel College for their first game of the day. While Chanel posted first points they failed convert. Casey Henry sprinted down the side for BTC and Tevin converted to have BTC leading 6-4 at half time. Unfortunately the wing was hammered to see Chanel take the lead again. A strong kicking game by Chanel saw the Thornburgh boys put under pressure to go down 6-18. Man of the Match was Roy Fisher. With the boys pool games over , the structuring of the division games saw the boys in the Bowl Division, which had them having to play CCC as their first game in their quest for Bowl Division honours. With CCC coming off a win earlier in the day, the BTC boys had to dig deep to claim a victory.Early in the game Anfernee Henry powered through the opposition to sprint over half the field to post a try so BTC led 4-0. The next try saw captain Roy Fisher charge over to post another try with Tevin converting 10-0. For the hat trick Fred Busley side stepped and swerved to leave the opposition grabbing at air to post one more try with Tom -Barry- McQueen converting. Half time saw BTC leading 16-0. CCC tried to come back in the second half but the boys defended well. Final score 16-10. Man of the Match was Anfernee Henry. After a rest day Wednesday, the boys have to take on ASSG on Thursday. Good luck Thornburgh.
Day 4
The Thornburgh men took on ASSG in the semi final for the Bowl Division. ASSG started strongly and posted first points 4 nil. BTC hit back with Roy crossing to equal 4 all. ASSG hammered our wing to go over again 8-4 . Half time the boys started strong but were again hammered by an on a roll ASSG team .Easy turn overs through dropped ball and penalties saw BTC on the back foot with ASSG crossing twice more. With 10 minutes to go BTC was down 18-4. It seemed a near impossible task to claw back but the boys found something more with Anfernee crossing, Roy powering his way over and Tom "Barry" McQueen claiming a try. Tevin converted one try. Hooter sounded with scores locked 18 all. Tevin "pressures on me" Neliman had the kick which could have given the blue wall a 2 point win ....but the kick went wide. In the semi final that meant 5 minutes extra time, each way. BTC got the ball and through strength and determination Anfernee powered his way across the line. The "blue" crowd was cheering. BTC defended well and kept ASSG from crossing their line. 5 minutes the other way Anfernee did another huge run but just landed short of the try line. The boys really put in a gutsy effort to keep ASSG try-less so when the hooter went the final score was 22-18. Unbelievable come back boys!!! Friday sees the BTC boys in the final for the Bowl . Put your game face on boys....right from the kick off! Good luck
Finals Day
The Thornburgh men ran onto the field to take on St Columbans in the Bowl Grand Final. The BTC boys powered to the line at the start of the game but failed to cross before St Columbans took the ball down the other end and crossed wide on the wing. BTC had the ball close to their try line on many occasions but the defense from the opposition denied them the points. the bigger hard running opposition had the Thornburgh men defending for a majority of the game. Some good strong runs from Roy, Anfernee and Brennan had the crowd cheering but the elusive try line that was so close was just a little bit too far. The boys tried their best but in the end had to settle for 2nd place....which was still a good result...and finished on top of the other Charters Towers teams. Coach's Award, Players Player and Man of the Match was Roy Fisher. Manager's Award went to Anfernee Henry and Supporters' Award went to both Darcy Ginns Larkin and Tom McQueen. Thanks to all supporters for cheering the boys on. It was a great week of footy. Thanks also to Coach Max Batt, Manager Adam Bowden and Leo West and Trainer Seb Phillott for their time and commitment to the team.
