BTC Boys Rugby League Confraternity Carnival

The boys arrived in Brisbane and after being transported to Nudgee College, their home for the next few days, went to  St Patricks Shorncliffe College for the Opening Ceremony.Captain, Scott Cerqui proudly displayed the confro jersey.
Day 1
What a great day. Although it was a bit cool and it rained for some of their first game the weather held, so good football could be played. Two games and 2 wins.  The first team the boys played was St Lukes from Bundaberg. The team went on pumped for a win and played strongly the entire game. Tries to Angus, Shannon, John John and Michael B. Final score was BTC 26- St Lukes 4. Man of the Match was Callum Brown.
The second game was against Holy Spirit, Mackay. Holy Spirit came out strongly and our boys seemed a little nervous. Although we put points on the board first they evened it just before half time so that each team had 6 points. In the second half BTC was a different team. They started strongly and dominated play to win 36-7. Good attack and defence with tries going to Angus, John John, Brandon, Dan, Scott and Shannon. Man of the Match went to Adam Fry.

Day 2 saw the weather progressively deteriorate so that the team played both games in the rain.
Game 1
We thought it would be a close game given the fact that results against other teams, by both BTC and St Michaels were similar. St Michaels (Carrara) scored first but failed to convert. BTC swung the ball out wide to see Danny Rayment cross in the corner and with the conversion unsuccessful, scores were locked at 4 all at half time. St Michaels got a quick try from the 2nd half kick off and converted to lead 10-4.  BTC  held up another attempted try by St Michaels with the hard work paying off when Scott Cerqui crossed and Callum Brown converted. 10 all at full time. Man of the Match was Callum Smith.
Game 2
Now seeded in the top of the Division 2 pools (  Plate Division) BTC played Shalom Bundaberg. Again the team knew it would be a hard game (Shalom had previously beaten CCC) half way into the first half , no one had scored until Angus McQueen scooted down the sideline to post first points in the game. BTC led 4- nil. Unforunately Shalolm fought back to make half time score 4 all. Both teams played hard in pretty frustrating and slippery conditions. The boys dug deep and Dan Webb crashed over the try line with Callum Brown converting a hard kick to give BTC the lead 10-4 with 2 minutes play left. The boys defended well and were rewarded with a well deserved win. Man of the Match was Dan Webb.
With Wednesday their rest day, the  boys  will play the semi final on Thursday.

Day 4   Semi- Final
What a GAME!!!!! BTC 10 Aquinas 4........  Conditions were muddy, sloppy, wet and windy.....not ideal for a Semi- final but our boys were ready. From the first kick off the team were focussed and attacking. Given the poor conditions the trusty boot of Scott Cerqui sent the ball safely down field and away from our line we were defending. He put it to the opposition by not just kicking on the last ball but sometimes the 3rd ball or the 4th ball which kept the opposition second guessing .....and making mistakes. The union skills came into play with such a kicking game and after a kick by Scott John John ran through and touched the ball down to give us a 4 point lead.  The play continued to be kick the ball with BTC going through strongly and tackling as soon as Aquinas got the ball. Great work here by winger Brandon Reed........but it has to be said that at all times we had 1,2 or3 players in the tackle. The boys were relentless.  Unfortunately after a chip kick, then kicking the ball through, the Aquinas centre also touched the ball down to try. 4 all.  The scored stayed this way ,despite some big runs from Callum, Toby, Dan, Shannon and Adam  close to the line, until full time where it was still a draw. Unfortunately they didnt play first points won but had to play another 5 minutes each way. First 5 minutes saw no change in the scores. Second 5 minutes saw some big runs by Shannon, one which made a lot of ground and had Aquinas back peddling. From this run, the ball passed out to John John scooting down the side to dive over in a puddle of water to lead 8-4. A fantastic conversion by Callum Brown saw BTC win 10-4.
The boys celebrated in the mud and took a few coaches with them. While Shannon Bailey rightly  received Man of the Match I would have given all  the team awards. Excellent show of strength, determination and mental attitude. Grand final tomorrow against Marist Emerald. GO IT BLUE!!!!!

Day 5

Everyday it just seems to get better! Grand Final  Division2  Winners!  BTC 16 defeated Marist College Emerald 0 to bring home the Neil Bloxsidge Memorial Plate.   Although the sun was actually shining today the grounds were still very muddy and wet, making playing conditions far from ideal.  A great way to start  the game was running through the tunnel that other teams had made- Aquinas (Game 5), St Lukes (Game 1) and ASSG players. BTC had a lot of possession of the ball and hammered Marists line but just could not get across the mark. Michael Brown was concussed and broke his nose as he, Josiah and Dan worked on a try saving tackle to see score at half time nil all.
Second half saw some more strong runs and defence from the team but it was the boot of Scott  followed by a run through and touch by Dan Webb that saw BTC gain the first points. Score 4 nil.
Marists kept running at BTC's line threatening to  gain points but the boys defence held strong. Again Scott's boot came into play and Callum Brown ran through from the kick to again try which he converted . Score 10 nil. By now the supporters were starting to smile.......still nervously ......but definitely smiling. Marist kept trying to find some points but when Damon Hesp dived over for the icing on the cake try which was again converted by Callum Brown they were disheartened and we were really smiling then. Shannon Bailey received Man of the Match again for some strong running play but once again it was a great team effort to produce the win!.
Congratulations also to Shannon Bailey, for being chosen in the QISSRL 2012 Representative Team

Thanks to supporters for their stalwart support in all sorts of weather- particularly Zoe Curtis, Ross Thompson  past students, parents and friends and Michael Gilbert for getting there for the final. We had the best cheer squad.
Thanks to Jack Francis, Max Batt and Seb Phillott for their training and guidance....and words of wisdom. Also thanks to James Dalitz for looking after the team.
