Brisbane Careers Trip
Students from Years 10,11 and 12 recently returned from their Careers Trip to Brisbane. An early start Tuesday morning saw the students bus to Townsville, fly to Brisbane, arriving at the airport at 10.30 where they caught the Airtrain into the CBD.After purchasing Go Cards to make inner city travel easier, they checked into their accommodation at the Brisbane City Youth Hostel, had a bite to eat then boarded the River Cat to take them to the University of Qld. After a welcome and overview of UQ the students enjoyed going on "The Great Race" where they were put into teams , given clues and had to find areas on the University Campus. That evening a group went to the movies while another tired group opted to catch up on some sleep. Wednesday and after a cooked breakfast the group walked to Southbank where they were involved in the Qld Museum's interactive Science Centre program . Popular activities included testing how fast you could throw a ball and seeing your reaction time. A walk around Southbank, followed by lunch and the group headed back to Roma Street Station to catch a bus to The Qld Institute of Medical Research. Here the students were given information about what the Institute does to promote health knowledge in poorer communities as well as how it is involved in research .They saw some technology and machines used in the research. After catching the bus back to the Youth Hostel, some students chose to go a Careers Display at Southbank before all meeting up at the Pancake Manor for dinner. The dessert pancakes were a big hit. Thursday was the day the students went to Dream World. After Hogs Breath for dinner, the tired students headed for bed before their last day in Brisbane.Friday morning, after packing and storing their bags, they walked to the Qantm College to find out about animation, web design and making games. The students each had a computer where they made 3D shapes and swords. After being shown a video depicting some of the designs that had been made at the College, the students caught the airtrain back to the airport to begin their journey back home. The students had a very busy but enjoyable week. Thanks to Mr Dalitz and Ms Aitchison for supervising the trip.
