Southern Skies Netball Carnival

Our roving reporter has sent the results and photos from Day 1 of the Southern Skies Netball Carnival. by all accounts the team and supporters are enjoying themselves.
Day 1 Southern Skies Netball
Game 1
BTC Netballers arrived keen to take on the opposition on a cold Brisbane morning. First game they were up against Brisbane based team Strikers these girls were big and strong and mainly of New Zealand descent and were going to be tough opponents.
This was the first game for the BTC girls for a few weeks, they worked hard and as the game went on they improved in defence and never gave up.
Final score Strikers 35, BTC 5
Game 2
The second game saw BTC up against Cav Rd SHS which is another Brisbane based team. BTC put up a good fight once again improving as the game went on. Although Cav Rd had a few height advantages, BTC worked well to shut them down.
Final score Cav Rd 27, BTC 11
Game 3
Third game was against St Saviours, Toowoomba
This game was a nail biter with both teams evenly matched. At half time, BTC was trailing by 4 points after a solid half in both attack and defence. The second half saw BTC come fighting back with good defence placing pressure on St Saviours passes. At the full time hooter, the opportunity to draw the game was taken and the shot went in, only to be called a “no goal” because the siren sounded before the ball left the hands. This was the best game yet with the final score at St. Saviours 12, BTC 11.
Game 4
BTC v’s St Monica’s from Melbourne
The girls went down to St Monica’s, first half was a good fight but they lost momentum in the second half which cost them the game. Overall the girls improved after every game and their opposition have commented on how pleasant and polite they have been to play against.
Day 2 – Southern Skies
Game 1
BTC V’s Budgies – Australian Indigenous
The first game of the day began a little rusty, with the weather being cold and windy. After a few dropped passes the BTC girls began to find their rhythm. The defence worked very well, getting many intercepts and rebounds. Overall, this was a better first game than Monday. The Budgies fought well and succeeded in the end.
Game 2
BTC V’s Bray Park – Brisbane
Everything seemed to come together in this game with the BTC girls coming out fired up. The girls were strong right from the start which gave them confidence to continue. With BTC leading at half time, Bray Park had a change of shooters and a change of momentum, challenging BTC for the lead. However, with strong defence from BTC and a great shooting and attacking combination, BTC extended the lead and came out with a win. BTC 18, Bray Park 10
Game 3
BTC V’s Palmerston – NT
Carrying on the momentum of the previous game the BTC girls came on court strong and confident. After a few dropped balls and sloppy passes, the girls picked up their mistakes with great defence and finished it off with good shooting. Palmerston put up a good fight with their shooters breaking strongly. Another great effort from the BTC girls! BTC24, Palmerston 8
Day 3 was a netball free day and the team went to Dreamworld, although they returned tired a great day was had by all and I am sure an early night will see them ready for the court again on day 4. Southern Skies organises evening activities for the teams, Monday night was the Cultural night with each team given the opportunity to perform. BTC girls wowed the audience with their country style dance taking out 3rd place but the only placing female team. Tuesday night they went to the movies and watched the latest Transformers movie.

The entire week was a lot of fun with some good netball played. A highlight of the Carnival were the friendships that were made. BTC made  great  friends with a team from New Zealand. This team has now invited BTC to visit them in their village in New Zealand next year to play Netball and experience the culture of New Zealand.Congratulations to Maddie Brown who ,for the second year running, was chosen in the "All Stars" team of the competition
