Primary students had a fun wet day in the pool and on the slide for their last school day of 2011. Thanks to the Year 11 helpers.....although I think they had a much fun as the Primary students.

Christmas Carols

Students, staff, family and friends gathered at the quadrangle for a sausage sizzle prior to the annual Carols Night. Boys moved throughout the crowd offering trays of nibblies to eat. Mini Christmas puddings on a stick, were popular treats. Christmas hamper winners included Kevin Zischke, Donna Sheales,Sandy Clavis while the signed Confro raffle of a signed Cowbys jeresy was won by Shiralee Critchley.The P&Fcontinued the tradition of sharing little Christmas puddings with supporters before the students presented the Christmas story. While Secondary students narrated the story, Primary and Blackthorn Kindy Kids involved in acting out the scenes of the story, before a Choir of students led the singing of songs relating to the story. Popular songs for the evening were Go Tell It On The Mountain , Sally Palmer's beautiful rendtition of O Holy Night,Angels We Have Heard on High and the always loved Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer(with all the echoes of course). BTC community also took this time to thank retiring MinisterViv Chapman for his commitment and support of BTC for many, many years. Thanks must go to BTC's chaplain, "Chappy" Amy Diesel, Miranda Davis, Helen Burgess on the piano, Kylee Champion, Mrs Cerqui's creative mask making and all P & F members who organised the event.

Budding Rocket Scientists

Year 4 and 5 students tested their prototype rockets with mixed success. The rockets were powered by the volatile mixture of vinegar and bi-carb. There was a lot of fizzing and excited students as they tested to see whose rocket would go the furtherest.

Japanese Cooking

A good way to understand a foreign culture is through its culinary delights. This is precise what a group of Year 8, 9 and 10 students did when they cooked themselves a Japanese feast. On the menu were steamed rice, su ki yaki (stewed beef), shou ga yaki (sautéed ginger beef) and karee raisu (Japanese curry). Students prepared and cooked the meals themselves and were given the thumbs up by the two teachers who sampled the food

Gold Fever

As a part of their local history and Gold Mining unit Ms Beauchamp's year nine class participated in a number of excursions. They had the pleasure of exploring the Venus Battery and were very interested in how the gold was extracted from rock. Their next excursion led them to the information centre where they enjoyed a short film on local history and were captivated by the stock exchange arcade before heading to explore the Zara Clark museum, which was full of treasures to see. Their final excursion took them to the Miners Cottage where they experienced Gold Fever while panning for gold, many students wanted to keep panning long after it was time to head back to school.

Year 7 Graduation Lunch

The Year 7 students, family and teachers celebrated the end of 'Primary School' at the Park Motel. They were treated to delicious finger food , drinks and dessert. Ms Schultz presented each student with a Certificate of Achievement as well as presenting them with a funny award. After lunch the students had their final Primary Assembly.

Junior School Bush Dance

Junior School enjoyed a Bush Dance and sausage sizzle recently. Each class performed a dance and then the rest of the Junior School and parents were invited to join in and try a new dance. In between the bush dances the students danced to disco music. The finals of BTC's Got Talent performed. In a difficult decision the prizes were as follows:

Valedictory Dinner

The Year 12 students stepped out in style with their family and friends at the Arthur Titley Centre for their Valedictory Dinner. Catering was by Henry's Restaurant and their waiters were Yr 11 boys. A good night was had by all. Thanks to Ms Aitchison for organising this celebration for the Seniors.

Year 12 Final Assembly

Bring out the tissues......it is time for the Final Year 12 Assembly.Jodie Fisher started the program of with a song before the Year 12 cohort walked into the Assembly Hall for the last time as Year 12 BTC students. After Mrs Moxham's speech the Year 12 's and audience were further treated to entertainment by Brianna Minuzzo, Jesse Adkins and Gemma Hills and Sheridan Callcott.Melissa Goldsworthy and Jack Dahl brought a smile (and a tear or two) to everyones faces as they recounted their memories of BTC. Presentations and hugs were done by Ms Aitchison and Mrs Cerqui and then it was out on the quadrangle for the BTC War Cry. The students , parents, staff and friends made a guard of honour from the hall to the front gate to cheer and congratulate the Seniors of 2011 as they made their way out of the gates. Congratulations to you all. BTC wishes you all the best in your future career paths.

BTC Speech Day- Senior School

Senior student's Speech Day started with the Year in Review, showing once more the varied currricular and co-curricular activities the students have on offer to particiapte in. College Captains, Georgia Masterson and Hudson Fox gave their entertaining reports before Hudson, Esa, and Georgie (accompanied by Digby on guitar) presented a moving rendition of "Count on Me ". After the Blackheath College Song, Mrs Moxham gave her Principal's Address. The Senior Specialist Vocal Group performed "I Believe" before BTC Chair of the Directors, Mrs McCubben addressed the audience. The singing of the Thornburgh College Hymn led into the presentation of Middle and Senior School Awards. With the Sporting and other Co-curricular awards having been presented at Co-curricular Night, the awards presented at Speech Day included, Subject and Academic Merit Awards, Prize recipients and Class Proxime Accessit and Dux. BTC Speech Day- Junior School

In the combined Speech Day format of this year, Junior School students had their formalities at the beginning of the program.The media presentation of the Year in Review showed the variety of curricular and co-curricular activities the students have been involved in throughout the year. Is it any woinder the year has been so busy. After a prayer from the chaplain Amy Diesel and address from Junior School Co-ordinator Cassie Fuller, the Prep-2 choir sang "Do Re Mi". Girl School Captain, Georgia Mintram gave her report, while, due to an ankle operation and stay in hospital, a video report from Boy School Captain , Jim Burgess, was screened . Presentation of Awards by Class Teachers included Sporting , Music, Drama, Religious and Citizenship Awards as well as Academic Enouragement and Excellence Awards. Junior Sportswoman of the year was Jessee Santo and Junior Sportsman of the Year was Takami Kuwajima. Proxime Accessit for Junior School was Leah Ryle while Dux of Junior School was Georgia Mintram. The Years 3-7 vocal group performed a beautiful version of "I Still Call Australia Home" and then Principal, Mrs Moxham, announced the Junior School Leaders for 2012. Junior School Captains are Maddison Aitchison and Jaxson Gallagher while Sports Captains are Sophie McLaren and Takami Kuwajima.

Co-Curricular Awards Evening

The Co-curricular Awards Evening returned to Blackthorn Hall this year. With new lighting and sound system, the hall decorated in House colours, it was time to celebrate the year's co-curricular activities.The Celebration format of the evening with students wearing their House uniform was a big hit with the students, bringing out a lot of school spirit and pride in their Houses. For a full list of Awardees please refer to the program of events or the report in a future BTC Briefing. Archie/ Black had a busy night picking up trophies in boys and girls Swimming, Tennis, Netball, rugby League (Aaron Campbell Memorial Shield), girls Soccer, Athletics(Nocoleche Cup, P&F Aggregate Cup), Junior girls and boys House winners, Senior girls and tied Senior boys which ulimately led to them winning the Lily Mc Master Shield and Champion House for Girls and the Logan Shield and Champion House for Boys. The other Houses did take home some wins as well. Bacon won the Softball, girls and boys Cross Country, Rugby League (Willmott Cup) and Cricket. Bryce Dickson House won boys Soccer (Fairclogh Family Shield), Athletics (Rossiter Cup, Dand D Hardie Overall Aggregate).
Individually, Sarah Hesp won the D.K. Beneke Athletics trophy and Thomas Polkinghorne won the Jos Allingham Athletics trophy. Junior Sportswoman was Layne Prichard while Darcy Ginns-Larkin was Junior Sportsman of 2011. Gemma Hills and Callum Smith were the Senior Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year.
Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award recipients were Jodie Fisher,Maddie Brown and Jack Dahl.
Undefeated Premiership winning teams were 2nds Softball, U14 Cricket and 2nd Girls Tennis. A group of 12 students were congratulated for having competed in all Interschool Sport available to them.
The audience were treated to excellent media presentations compled by Hudson Fox and Gemma Hills , "Sister Act" drama performance, The Stage Band performing "Let Me Entertain You" and an unbelievable dance performance by Anton, Esa and John John (boys you have been hiding your talent!!)
A great night was had by all. A big thanks to Marnie Wilson, Paul Roose and Laurie Crole for putting it all together.

Senior Disco

Secondary students gathered at the hall for the Seniors last disco of their school life at BTC. The theme this year was "Disney" with lots of students going to a lot of effort to dress up.

Amateur Astrophotography

Students used the Observatory on Saturday night to view Jupiter and the Full Moon. We were amazed to see that the cloud bands and 4 Galilean moons of Jupiter were clearly visible. Students trialled some astrophotography while there and captured some quite good images of Jupiter and the Moon. These images are a little 'raw' at the present time but as we become familiar with the camera exposure times and focal ability of the telescope this should improve.

Our next challenge will be the Great Nebula in Orion.

But before we get to the Orion nebula we have been able to capture some photos of one of Jupiter's Galilean moons, Eurpoa, coming into transit. Transit is where the body (in this case the moon Europa) passes across the face (passes infront of) the other object (in case Jupiter). These photos were taken by Jake Penna, Dale Perrett and Jacob Darcy and show the tiny moon as it approaches the edge of the gas giant Jupiter.

Primary Interschool Swimming Carnival

The BTC Primary swimmers represented the College at the recent Interschool Swimming Carnival. The first event was the 100m Free where Georgia Mintram and Leah Ryle in the girls and Jayden Pickering and Jim Burgess in the boys dug deep to churn through the water. Our 9 yr old Invitational swimmers were Emma Zishke and Harry Mintram. In the 10yr old events Ronnie Critchley and Manya Tripathi made it through to the finals with Connor Neville always giving his best. 11 year olds, Jessee Santo and Jessica Stinson were always up with the pack and swimming in the finals while Jordan Bidewell gave 100% effort. In the12 yr old competition Georgia and Leah swam in all the events while Tak Kuwajima,Jayden Pickering, Jim Burgess and Jack Mc Queen battled it out. Teearni Stagg was our only 13 yr old Primary representative. In the relays we had some extra swimmers swim to make the team. In the Junior Free Relay Taylor Hughes joined the girls while Ned Marshall and Isaiah Vailalo joined the boys.In the Junior Medley Relay Breeanna Eberle swam the breaststroke lap for the girls while Ned Marshall swam the backstroke with Isaiah Vailalo bringing home the team in the freestyle lap.
The team put in a fantastic effort during the Carnival and came 2nd in the Average trophy. Teearni Stagg won the 13yrs age group. Well done to all the swimmers. You were all champions!

Year 11 Science 21 Excursion

It was a hot november morning when the year 11 science 21 class departed on the epic trip to
'PLANT'S MEAT SLAUGHTER HOUSE!!!". As the bus left BTC the class was preparing themselves for a super size dissection of a cows digestive system. As the dust settled from the bus, the smell hit us like a truck, little did we know the smell was going to get worse. The 8 BTC students and Ms. Carthew hardened up and waltzed in for a dissection like nothing that has ever happened at school.

Courtney Sheales, Cassie Jones, Stella Batt, Dylan Hando, Laurence Crole, Scott Cerqui, Damon Hesp and Renee Bond were all intrigued by the digestive tract that was just cut out of the slaughtered beast. There were still nerve fibers firing which caused areas of the organ to twitch. It was interesting to see the inside of all four different parts of the cow's stomach.

After investigating the parts of the stomach it was time to discover the length of the intestinal tract. Ms. Carthew began cutting the connective tissue while Laurence and Dylan stretched it out, we measured it out to be approx. 30 metres in length.

After slicing and dicing organs like Rambo did in his movies we decided to spin the wheels of the beast, a.k.a. the BTC bus, to school to enjoy fish and chips for lunch.

Thank you Ms. Carthew for a great Science 21 trip. Hope there are more excursions to come.

Star Gazing at BTC

Friday (4^th November) and Saturday (5^th November) 8 Senior Physics/Math B students 4 from BTC and 4 from Atherton State High spent time aligning the BTC 9 ¼ inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope housed in the new Sirius Dome near the BTC Kindy. This project has been funded by the BTC Foundation through the Norm Wallace Science Discovery Fund via a combination of cash and in-kind donations from several bighearted individuals (the College thanks them for their generosity). Throughout the two days students and staff and the fund’s inspiration Mr Norm Wallace where treated to some lectures and practical telescope work under the tutelage of Dr Graeme White (Adjunct Professor at Charles Sturt University) and Senior Physics QSA program developer Mr David Platz (Atherton State High). Students constructed a small reflector telescope each and assisted with the polar alignment of the 9 ¼ Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain, a project that went until the early hours of Saturday morning, however, everyone still made it to cooked breakfast at 8am. Mr Rod Goodwin was instrumental in sourcing the expertise and equipment to get the project together and the College thanks him for the time and effort he has put into the venture. The telescope is suitable for both direct viewing and astrophotography and it is expected that 2012 events like the transit of Venus (June) and the total solar eclipse (November) may be streamed to the web for viewing. Now all we need are some clear skies for viewing and photographing

Primary Interhouse Swimming Carnival

After a busy Grandparents Morning the Primary students backed up with their Interhouse Swimming Carnival. With plenty of supporters and Secondary student helpers, the swimmers hit the water. Races ranged from shallow water events through to 25 m, 50 m and 100m events. Jessee Santo broke the only record of the day in her 50m fly .Age champions were:

Grandparents Day

Primary students celebrated Grandparents Day on Friday. Many grandparents joined their grandchildren in their classrooms. The students heard lots of stories about "the good old days?" Stories included about having to milk the cow before school, how they got to school, no computers, all the writing was on blackboards and being smacked with a ruler for being naughty! Our students are glad they are at school now and not in 'the good old days'. Year 3 made cards for their special guests. The grandparents had a lovely morning tea and enjoyed their time talking together.

Styling Up Healthy

A group of BTC students participated in the Styling Up Healthy workshop at CTSHS.The students were treated to dance displays, were involved in discussions and talks about having fun without the need for alcohol or drugs and to have respect for themselves. Elite indigenous athletes in sports such as softball, soccer, volleyball, AFL and some Cowboys rugby league players took them through some games and talked to them. There was plenty of food and gifts with a delicious Kup Murri for lunch. The highlight of the day was the visit from Jessica Mauboy, who not only told of her life but performed for them. A great time was had by all.

Interhouse Cricket and Softball

Students have been involved in House competitions of Cricket and Softball with a lot of passion and fun as mates battle mates for pride of House. Some students who were not in the cricket team played volleyball.While the Senior softball competition still has to be finalised, the Junior results were Bryce 1st, Bacon 2nd, Archie 3rd. The Cricket competition saw Junior students results-; 1st - Archie Black, 2nd - Bryce Dickson, 3rd - Bacon , while Senior results were- 1st - Bacon, 2nd - Bryce Dickson, 3rd - Archie Black. After tallying up points all teams were on 4 points and a 3-way tie, so the best opening runs for the Seniors was used to decide the placings, with the overall position of winning house as: 1st - Bacon, 2nd - Bryce Dickson, 3rd - Archie Black.

BTC 's Got Talent

Primary students hosted a BTC's Got talent competition. Judges Mrs " I love a joke" Cerqui and Mrs "get up and dance"Burgess enjoyed the entertaining acts. Amy played guitar and sang Crazy while Brianna, Megan and Taylor chose to sing Butterfly Fly Away. There were dancers; Shona was creative while Jahana, Lili and Emma not only choreographed their own dance to Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows but also painted their own shirts.Konnar showed what he has learnt on the drums while Dan played jungle rhythms on his drums. There were other instrumental acts with Conner playing the piano and Emma playing the flute. Acting talent was highlighted in Emma, Ned and Blake's Star Wars play while the three clowns, Jade, Poppy and Erin kept everyone laughing especially when Poppy got a pie in her face. Michael, Humayl and Kascie wowed the crowd with their magic tricks and Monique and Gemma showed their expertise with the hula hoops. Congratulations to all the presenters and the judges had a really tough time choosing winners but the 5 winners were The Clown Act (Poppy,Jade and Erin), Amy singing Crazy ,Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows dance (Jahana, Lili, Emma),Dan drumming a jungle beat and Brianna, Megan and Taylor singing Butterfly Fly Away

BTC Sudents Help at Under 8's Day

8 Students from BTC helped out at the School of Distance Education Under 8’s Day on Friday the 28^th October. BTC students made sure the young distance education children and their siblings had a great day, getting face painted, making play dough pies, constructing Indian Head-dresses and creating pet rocks. As you can see the older students also got into the spirit of the day, and two students (Jessica Batt and Samantha Hintz) found the experience a good confirmation for their proposed future career directions – commenting that the experience fitted in very well with their Certificate III Childcare Studies. Others were just there to help out and an enjoyable time was had by all.

Relay For Life

BTC students competed in Relay for Life at the Showgrounds recently. From 2pm Saturday until 9am Sunday morning students were involved in the BTC Interact Team and walked continuously around the oval. During the relay students could be involved in activities such as Zumba, three- legged races and egg and spoon races. The teams were entertained by bands, singers and performers throughout the night. The boarders from BTC joined the relay team for some of the evening. The event was successful in raising much needed funds for cancer. Thanks to Mrs Schultz and Carmen Ryan for supervising the team.

Junior School Assembly

Secondary Schools Touch Football Carnival

BTC students played well in the Secondary Schools Touch Carnival. With some players backing up after Relay For Life the students represented the College well and all teams made it through to the finals. The 13/14 Yrs Girls played ASSG as did the 13/14 Yrs Boys while the Mixed Open team played CCC.Unfortunately the teams just went down in the finals.Players were chosen in the 13/14 and 15/16 Age groups to represent Charters Towers in Townsville on 5th and 6th November. In the 13/14 Boys Errol Miller,Jarrod Holroyd,Casey Henry, Darcy Ginns-Larkin and Jacob Mc Laren were selected in the Charters Towers team. Layne Prichard,Katie Williams and Demi Goldsworthy were selected in the Charters Towers 13/14 Yrs Girl team. In the 15/16 Years Age division Shanae Kettenun and Elissa Marsterson were selected in the Girls Team while Scott Cerqui and Dan Webb were selected in the Charters Towers Boys Team. Thanks to Marnie for organising the teams for the Carnival.

Transition Morning in Junior School

The first Transition Morning in junior School was held this week. Year 1 students visited the Year 2 Class and the Kindy Kids visited the Prep Class. Prep and Kindy Kids had fun making a number snake, having stories and making new friends. Because Kindy visits the Junior Library every week and has been involved with Junior Fun Days, it was not a daunting task to visit the Prep room. Everyone is looking forward to the next visit.

BTC Family Fun Day

With teachers and staff away for Moderation Meetings,Leadership Camp and PE Workshops it was suggested to have a Family Fun Day for the remaining staff, students and parents. Kindy joined in the activities with K-2 in the undercover area, while Yr 3-8 were involved in a rotation of sports; Rugby Union, Tennis, Cricket and Boardgames. Years 9-12 worked around rotational activities of team building, gardening and games. With Bunnings representatives on hand with plants and advice, each Sporting House had a garden bed to plant and tend After lunch there were organized games which included sack races, three legged races, egg and spoon races and throw and catch with a raw egg. A lot of Secondary students tried to catch their eggs.......gently. With watermelon and ice blocks available after events, students had a great time. While the sausages sizzled, a group action song was performed with a lot of attitude. To top off a great day students, staff and parents enjoyed a sausage and a cold drink. Thanks to Mrs Cerqui, Mr Roose, Mrs Diesel and P&F for organizing the day.

Rugby Tenz Competition

The annual Rugby Tenz competition once again saw lots of excited spectators as well as lots of excited players gather at the Bulls Rugby Union grounds. The first round of games were very promising with most teams winning their game. As usual it was the girls' games that brought the loudest reaction from the spectators. It was great to see Courtney (who broke her leg on Wednesday ) run the girls on for their first game against ASSG.The life-like cardboard cutout inspired the team to play well. The teams played through a wind storm, complete with lightening and eventually some rain, on the Friday evening and hot, humid conditions on the Staurday morning. At the end of the competition the BTC Open boys comfortably won their division with all other teams placing 3rd in their divisions. Callum Brown was voted Best and Fairest player for the 15 Years division.Thanks to Mr Roose and Digby for all their help in coaching the teams.

CSIRO Visit Junior School

BTC students from Prep to Year 7 were treated to Scientific discovery activities from a CSIRO scientist. P-3 students used everyday products to make 4 different types of slime.These Slime Scientists were amazed at the different types of slime and how easy they were to make. Year 4-7 became Electrical Bright Sparks as they made electrical currents. A very enjoyable and educational session for all students and teachers.

Prep and Year One Cooking Skills

Prep and Year One students recently were masterchefs in the Home Ec cooking area. They made a shortbread recipe and then cut star shapes out to finish off their Space theme for the Term.

Primary Cup Netball

BTC Primary Netball Team travelled to Townsville to compete in the Primary Netball Cup competition.Game 1 against Bwgcolman BTc won 14-2. In the 2nd game BTC defeated St Josephs 14-1. BTC continued playing well to defeat Bluewater 19-1 and win their pool of games. In the final they played their best against a taller and well drilled Magnetic Island team but unfortunately went down 1-14. BTC's GA,Amy Neville, won the Best and Fairest Player. Congratulations to the team of Amy, Georgia,Jessica, Jessee, Teearni, Meaghan, Brianna, Sophie and Lauren. Thanks To Mrs Cerqui and Mrs Neville for coaching and umpiring, Marnie for organising and thanks to Mrs Mintram for taking photos.

Talk Like a Pirate Day

BTC School students from Kindy to Year 5 celebrated Talk Like a Pirate Day. The Pirate Captain for the day (aka Linley Cerqui) had lots of fun activities organised for the students. They could fish for treasure, catch crabs, make an eye patch, a pirate hat and a parrot to perch on their shoulders. There was a pirate ship colouring in activity and lots of games which also included an obstacle course where they could walk the plank. A fun day was had by all. RRRRRRR

Yr 9 Hands-On History Class

Year 9 History students who are studying about World War One are experiencing the trials and tribulations of using trenches for protection during the war. While theirs are mini trenches and in soft sand, they are still understanding the hardships the diggers had of not only digging out the trenches but also the added discomfort of actually living in the trenches. The students are also finding it amazing that they are having difficulty maintaining the trench structures even when they are not under fire!.
